Saint David, regarded as the patron saint of Wales, founded a monastic community of remarkable austerity at the site that bears his name today, Saint Davids, where the monks lived under a rule of considerable discipline that included manual labour, extended periods of silence, and abstinence even from alcohol, a practice that earned him the affectionate title David the Water-Drinker among those who knew him. He travelled widely to found churches not only across Wales but also in Cornwall, Brittany, and Ireland, and tradition holds that he played a leading role in defending orthodox Christian teaching against the Pelagian heresy at an assembly remembered as the Synod of Llanddewi Brefi. He is remembered above all in Welsh tradition for the simple counsel reportedly given to his monks as his final instruction, urging them to remain joyful, to keep the faith, and to do the little things they had seen and heard him do, a phrase still widely quoted throughout Wales to this day. He remains the most beloved of all Welsh saints, his feast continuing to be celebrated each year as a day of national as well as spiritual significance.

O holy Father David, who didst teach that faithfulness is shown in small and ordinary things, intercede for us, that we too may serve God faithfully in the little tasks of each day, not waiting for grand occasions to prove our devotion. Amen.
