Saint Cuthbert of Lindisfarne Framed Canvas Icon

Saint Cuthbert worked as a shepherd in the hills of Northumbria before a vision he experienced at the very hour of Saint Aidan's death prompted him to abandon that life and enter the monastery, eventually rising to become prior and later Bishop of Lindisfarne, the same community Aidan himself had founded a generation earlier. He combined the demanding responsibilities of episcopal leadership with a deep personal love of solitude, periodically withdrawing to the remote and windswept island of Inner Farne to live for a time as a hermit, and he became known among the people of his diocese for gifts of healing and an unusual tenderness toward the natural world around him. He died in solitude upon Inner Farne, and when his body was later exhumed it was reportedly found remarkably preserved, a wonder that increased devotion to him considerably and led to his shrine becoming one of the most visited pilgrimage destinations in the whole of medieval England. He remains, alongside Aidan, one of the most beloved early saints of northern England, honoured by the Orthodox Church as part of the rich and ancient Christian inheritance of the British Isles that long predates the later division between East and West.
