Saint Benedict of Nursia is venerated in the Orthodox Church as the Holy Venerable Benedict, one of the greatest monastic fathers of the ancient undivided Western Church, whose Rule of Saint Benedict became the foundation of monastic life throughout Western Christendom and whose influence on the spiritual, cultural and intellectual life of Europe is immeasurable. Born around 480 AD in Nursia in Umbria in central Italy, he was sent to Rome for his education but fled the corruption of the city to live as a hermit in a cave at Subiaco. Disciples gathered around him and he eventually founded twelve monasteries before establishing the great monastery of Monte Cassino around 529, which became the mother house of Benedictine monasticism and one of the most important centres of Christian civilisation in the history of the West. His Rule, characterised by the motto Ora et Labora, pray and work, established a balanced rhythm of prayer, work, study and hospitality that shaped Western monasticism for fifteen centuries. He reposed around 547 AD and his feast day is celebrated in March in the Orthodox Church.
