Saint Bede the Venerable Framed Canvas Icon

Sale price£70.00

Saint Bede entered monastic life as a child at the twin monastery of Wearmouth and Jarrow in Northumbria and remained there for virtually the whole of his long life, combining unwavering devotion to the daily round of prayer with a scholarly output that would establish him as the most significant intellectual figure of early Anglo-Saxon England. His Ecclesiastical History of the English People remains to this day the single most important surviving source for the early history of Christianity in England, and his other writings ranged across biblical commentary, the natural sciences, grammar, and the calculation of time, including influential work on dating that helped popularise the now familiar practice of numbering years from the birth of Christ. Despite this vast scholarly achievement, accounts of his final days describe a man more concerned with humble service than reputation, reportedly dictating the closing words of a translation of the Gospel of John into the English tongue even as he lay dying. He is honoured by the Orthodox Church, alongside the other early saints of these islands, as a faithful scholar and monk of the shared Christian inheritance that existed long before the later division between East and West.

“Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might.” (Ecclesiastes 9:10)

O holy Father Bede, who didst labour in prayer and learning until thy very last breath, intercede for us, that whatever work is given us to do, we may do it faithfully and without growing weary. Amen.
