Saint Barbara the Great Martyr Orthodox Christian Coffee Mug

Saint Barbara the Great Martyr is one of the most celebrated and widely venerated martyrs of the Orthodox Christian Church, honoured throughout the entire Christian world as a powerful intercessor and protectress, particularly at the hour of death. Born in the 3rd century in Heliopolis in Syria or according to some accounts in Nicomedia, she was the beautiful daughter of a wealthy pagan nobleman named Dioscoros who kept her locked in a tower to protect her from suitors. Through her own contemplation of the natural world and later through contact with Christians, Barbara came to faith in the one true God and received baptism. When her father discovered her faith he handed her over to the Roman authorities himself and she was subjected to terrible tortures with extraordinary courage before being beheaded by her own father around 306 AD. She is venerated as the patron saint of those in danger of sudden death, miners, artillerymen and all who face death without time for preparation. Her feast day is celebrated in December.
