Saint Augustine of Hippo is venerated in the Orthodox Church as the Blessed Augustine, one of the greatest theologians and writers of the ancient undivided Church, whose intellectual gifts, spiritual depth and extraordinary conversion from a life of sin to one of total dedication to God have made him one of the most widely read and influential Christian authors in all of history. Born in 354 AD in Thagaste in North Africa, in what is now Algeria, to a pagan father and the devout Christian Saint Monica, he lived for many years in pursuit of worldly pleasure and intellectual satisfaction, passing through Manichaeism and Neoplatonism before his famous conversion in Milan in 386 AD, moved by the words of Saint Paul, after hearing a child's voice say tolle lege, take up and read. His Confessions, addressed directly to God and telling the story of his conversion, is one of the greatest spiritual autobiographies ever written. He became Bishop of Hippo in North Africa and produced an enormous body of theological writing. He reposed in 430 AD during the siege of Hippo by the Vandals. His feast day is celebrated in June in the Orthodox Church.
