Saint Augustine of Canterbury, not to be confused with the considerably more famous Augustine of Hippo who lived two centuries earlier, was a Roman monk sent by Pope Gregory the Great on a mission to bring the Christian faith to the Anglo-Saxon peoples of England at the close of the sixth century. Arriving in the kingdom of Kent, he successfully brought about the conversion of King Ethelbert, an event that opened the way for the wider Christianisation of southern England, and he established his episcopal seat at Canterbury, a see that has remained the symbolic centre of English Christianity in the many centuries since. He worked to establish church structures, build places of worship, and train local clergy capable of sustaining the mission he had begun, laying foundations that would shape the religious life of England for generations to come. Like the other early saints of the British Isles and Western Europe honoured here, Augustine lived well before the division between East and West, and the Orthodox Church remembers him as a faithful missionary of the early undivided Church that first brought the Gospel to English soil.

O holy Father Augustine, who didst carry the Gospel to a distant and unfamiliar land, intercede for us, that we too may carry the faith to wherever we are sent, however far from home that calling takes us. Amen.
