Saint Anthony the Great Orthodox Christian Coffee Mug

Saint Anthony the Great is the father of Christian monasticism, one of the greatest saints in the entire history of the Orthodox Church and the founder of the eremitic tradition of monastic life that has shaped Orthodox spirituality to this day. Born around 251 AD in Coma in Egypt to a wealthy Christian family, he was orphaned at around eighteen and shortly after heard in church the words of Christ spoken to the rich young man, go sell what you have and give to the poor and you shall have treasure in heaven, which he took as personally addressed to him. He gave away all his possessions and withdrew into the desert to pursue God in solitude, prayer and extreme asceticism. He endured decades of ferocious spiritual warfare against demonic powers, triumphing through the power of Christ and the sign of the Cross. Disciples gathered around him in the desert and he became the great teacher of the monastic life, the Abba, the father of thousands of monks. He lived to the extraordinary age of 105 and reposed in 356 AD. His feast day is celebrated in January and he is venerated as the father of all monks and the model of Christian asceticism.
