Despotess Angelina, wife of the blind exiled ruler Stefan Brankovic, lived through one of the most difficult periods in Serbian history, the years following the Ottoman conquest when the Serbian nobility was scattered and the continuity of both crown and Church seemed under threat of being lost entirely. Following her husband's death, she carried his relics with her through years of wandering exile, eventually finding refuge in the region of Srem, where she raised her sons and worked tirelessly to preserve both the memory of the Nemanjic inheritance and the Orthodox faith of her scattered people. She founded the Krusedol Monastery, which became a centre of Serbian spiritual and cultural life in exile, and several of her own children, including two of her sons, are themselves venerated as saints alongside her. She is remembered with deep affection as a mother of the Serbian people, a woman whose quiet perseverance through displacement and loss helped carry an entire nation's faith and identity safely through its darkest years.
