Saint Ambrose of Milan Coffee Mug

Saint Ambrose of Milan is venerated in the Orthodox Church as one of the greatest hierarchs and theologians of the ancient undivided Church, celebrated for his extraordinary courage in standing up to imperial power in defence of the Church, for his brilliant theological writings and hymnography and for his role as the spiritual father and instructor of Saint Augustine of Hippo. Born around 340 AD in Trier in what is now Germany to a senior Roman official, he was appointed Governor of Liguria and Emilia and was residing in Milan when the Bishop of Milan died and both the Orthodox and Arian factions in the city were unable to agree on a successor. A child's voice in the crowd is said to have cried out Ambrose for bishop, and despite his protests and the fact that he had not yet even been baptised, he was elected bishop by acclamation, baptised and consecrated within a week in 374 AD. He proved to be one of the greatest bishops in Church history, composing magnificent hymns still sung in the Church today, writing important theological works and most famously refusing to allow the Emperor Theodosius to enter the church until he had done public penance for ordering a massacre. His feast day is celebrated in December.
