Saint Ambrose served as a Roman civil governor in northern Italy before being unexpectedly chosen by popular acclaim to become Bishop of Milan, a position he initially resisted given that he had not yet even been baptised, though he was swiftly baptised and consecrated once the choice of the people became clear. As bishop, he became renowned for an unwavering insistence that even the highest earthly authority remained subject to the moral law of the Church, most famously requiring Emperor Theodosius to undergo public penance before being readmitted to Holy Communion following a brutal massacre the emperor had ordered, a striking assertion that no power on earth stood above accountability to God. He defended the Nicene faith against the Arian heresy with both eloquence and firmness, composed hymns that shaped the development of Western Christian worship, and later served as a guide and mentor to the young Augustine of Hippo, personally baptising him into the faith that would make him one of the most influential theologians in Christian history. Ambrose lived and served well before the later division between East and West, and the Orthodox Church honours him among the great fathers of the shared early Christian inheritance.
