Saint Alexander Nevsky, the Holy Blessed Prince Alexander Yaroslavich Nevsky, is one of the greatest national heroes and saints of Russia, venerated throughout the Orthodox world as the protector of the Russian land, the defender of the Orthodox faith and one of the wisest and most courageous rulers in Russian history. Born in 1221 in Pereslavl-Zalessky, he became Grand Prince of Novgorod and later Grand Prince of Vladimir during one of the most dangerous periods in Russian history, when Russia faced simultaneous threats from the Mongol invasion from the East and the crusading military orders of the West. In 1240 he won a brilliant victory over the Swedish forces on the banks of the Neva River, from which he received the surname Nevsky. In 1242 he won the celebrated Battle on the Ice on Lake Peipus against the Teutonic Knights, preserving the Orthodox faith in the Russian northwest. He then chose the path of diplomacy with the Mongols to preserve the Russian people, a decision of extraordinary political wisdom that saved millions of lives. He received the monastic schema before his repose in 1263 and was glorified as a saint in 1547. His feast day is celebrated in December and September.
