According to ancient tradition Christianity was brought to the territory of present-day Romania by the Apostle Andrew himself, who preached in the regions of Scythia Minor along the Black Sea coast. The Romanian people, descended from the Dacians and the Roman colonists who gave them their Latin language, received the Gospel early and have maintained the Orthodox faith through centuries of pressure from Catholic Hungary, Ottoman domination and the devastating persecution of the communist era. The Romanian Orthodox Church has produced extraordinary saints including Saint Paraskeva of the Balkans whose relics rest in Iasi, Saint John of Neamt, the great translation scholar and monastic reformer, and a multitude of 20th century martyrs and confessors including Father Dimitrie Bejan, Father George Calciu and the Burning Bush movement of monastic renewal. Romanian monasticism, particularly in Moldavia, has produced some of the finest examples of painted exterior church frescoes in the world.
