The Nativity of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ is one of the Twelve Great Feasts of the Orthodox Church and the most joyful celebration in the Christian calendar after Holy Pascha. Celebrated in January according to the Julian calendar, the Nativity commemorates the Incarnation of the eternal Son of God, who took flesh from the Most Holy Virgin Mary and was born in a cave in Bethlehem of Judea during the reign of King Herod and the Emperor Augustus. The Orthodox celebration of the Nativity is preceded by a forty-day fast, the Advent Fast, and is marked by magnificent liturgical services including the Royal Hours, the Vespers with Liturgy of Saint Basil and the Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom on the feast day itself. The troparion of the feast proclaims that Christ is born, glorify Him, Christ comes from heaven, go and meet Him. The feast is followed by a twelve-day celebration concluding with Theophany in January.
