The Monasteries of Meteora in central Greece are among the most breathtaking and spiritually awe-inspiring monastic sites in the entire world. Monastic life began here in the 11th century when hermits sought solitude in the caves of the rocks, and by the 14th and 15th centuries grand monasteries had been constructed on the summits. Of the original twenty-four monasteries, six remain active today, continuing the ancient tradition of Orthodox prayer and monastic life. Meteora is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most visited Orthodox pilgrimage destinations in Greece.
