The Macedonian Orthodox Church represents the Orthodox Christian tradition of the Macedonian people, a tradition of profound historical depth and spiritual richness. The territory of North Macedonia holds a uniquely important place in the entire history of Christianity and of Orthodox culture, for it was in the ancient Macedonian city of Thessaloniki that Saints Cyril and Methodius were born in the 9th century, the two holy brothers who became the Apostles to the Slavs, created the Glagolitic and then the Cyrillic alphabet, translated the Scriptures and liturgical books into the Slavic language and brought the Orthodox faith to all the Slavic peoples. Without the missionary work of these two Macedonian saints there would have been no written Slavic language, no Slavic Christian literature and no Orthodox civilisation among the Slavic peoples of Eastern Europe and Russia. The ancient city of Ohrid in Macedonia was the seat of Saint Clement of Ohrid, one of the disciples of Cyril and Methodius, who founded a great school and theological centre there, and the Archbishopric of Ohrid was one of the most important ecclesiastical centres of the medieval Orthodox world. The Macedonian Orthodox people celebrate their faith with great devotion and love for their national saints and traditions.
