The Orthodox Church in Lithuania represents the Orthodox Christian tradition in one of the last nations of Europe to receive Christianity, a land that maintained its ancient pagan religion longer than any other European country and where the Orthodox faith has been present since the medieval Lithuanian Grand Duchy incorporated large Belarusian and Ukrainian Orthodox territories. Lithuania was the last pagan state in Europe, not receiving Christianity until 1387, and during the medieval period the Grand Duchy of Lithuania was one of the largest states in Europe, encompassing vast Orthodox Christian territories of present-day Belarus and Ukraine alongside the pagan Lithuanian heartland. The Grand Duchy produced several remarkable Orthodox figures including Saint Casimir, venerated in both the Catholic and Orthodox traditions, and the royal family of the Jogailaičiai whose Orthodox members founded churches and monasteries throughout the duchy. The Orthodox Church in Lithuania today serves primarily the Russian and Belarusian Orthodox communities of the country, maintaining the ancient liturgical tradition with faithfulness through the Soviet period and into the present. The Orthodox faithful of Lithuania have preserved their ancient faith amidst the complex history of a land that has been Catholic, pagan, Lutheran, Soviet and now European in its successive identities.
