The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch, which encompasses Lebanon, represents one of the oldest and most historically significant Christian communities in the entire world, for Lebanon and greater Syria were among the very first lands evangelised by the Apostles of Christ and have maintained an unbroken Christian presence for two thousand years. The ancient Phoenician cities of Tyre and Sidon, located in present-day Lebanon, are mentioned in the Gospels as places visited by our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and the region of Lebanon was part of the heartland of early Christianity from the beginning. Lebanon has produced extraordinary Orthodox Christian saints and spiritual figures, most beloved of whom is Saint Charbel Makhlouf, a Maronite monk but revered throughout all Christian traditions, as well as the great Saint Raphael of Brooklyn, the first Orthodox bishop consecrated in North America, who was born in Damascus but ministered extensively among Lebanese Antiochian Orthodox immigrants to America. The Lebanese Orthodox community has maintained its faith through extraordinary historical trials including the devastating civil war of 1975 to 1990, the ongoing economic collapse and the catastrophic Beirut port explosion of 2020, finding in the Orthodox faith an inexhaustible source of strength, identity and hope.
