The Latvian Orthodox Church represents the Orthodox Christian tradition of the Latvian people, a Baltic nation whose Orthodox community has maintained its faith through the extraordinary trials of the 20th century including Soviet occupation, mass deportations to Siberia and decades of atheist persecution, emerging from these ordeals with a renewed and deepened faith that speaks of the indestructible power of the Orthodox tradition. Saint John Pommers is the most beloved saint of the Latvian Orthodox Church, venerated for his extraordinary courage in defending the Church against Soviet persecution and his willingness to lay down his life for his flock.
