Orthodox Christianity in Germany represents a vibrant and growing presence of the ancient faith in the largest country of Western Europe, a land with deep pre-schism Christian roots and a growing Orthodox community drawn from Russian, Greek, Serbian, Romanian and other Orthodox immigrant communities as well as an increasing number of German converts to the Orthodox faith. Germany holds an important place in the history of the ancient undivided Church through its pre-schism saints, many venerated in the Orthodox Church today, including Saint Boniface, the Apostle of Germany who evangelised the Germanic peoples in the 8th century and was martyred for his faith, Saint Hildegard of Bingen, the remarkable 12th century abbess, theologian and visionary, and Saint Albert the Great, the great medieval theologian and scientist. Germany was also the birthplace of Saint Ambrose of Milan, whose family came from Trier. The Orthodox presence in Germany grew enormously in the 20th century through Russian emigre communities following the Revolution and later through immigration from all Orthodox countries after the Second World War. Today Germany has a large and diverse Orthodox community with dozens of parishes in all major cities, serving Orthodox Christians who have made their home in this great nation at the heart of Europe.
