According to tradition Saint Nino came to Georgia as a slave girl, a captive from Cappadocia, and through her prayers and the miracles God worked through her she converted the Georgian royal family and ultimately the entire nation. Georgia is unique in the Orthodox world as a country whose patron and protector is a woman, the Most Holy Theotokos, who is said to have appeared to the Apostle Andrew and declared Georgia as her earthly garden, paralleling the role of the Theotokos on Mount Athos. The Georgian Orthodox Church has produced extraordinary saints including Saint Nino, Saint King Mirian who was converted through her ministry, Saint David the Builder, the great medieval king and champion of the faith, and in the modern era Saint Gabriel of Georgia who burned a portrait of Lenin in public protest against Soviet persecution of Christians. The ancient Georgian script itself was created for the purposes of translating the Scriptures and the liturgical books.
