The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church is one of the most ancient and extraordinary Christian churches in the entire world, with a history of continuous Christian witness stretching back to the 4th century and apostolic roots reaching back even further to the conversion of the Ethiopian eunuch by the Deacon Philip as recorded in the Acts of the Apostles. Ethiopia holds the extraordinary distinction of being one of the first kingdoms in the world to adopt Christianity as its official state religion, under King Ezana of the Aksumite Empire in the 4th century, following the missionary work of Saint Frumentius, known in Ethiopia as Abba Selama. Ethiopia also claims the ancient tradition of possessing the Ark of the Covenant, kept in the Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion in Aksum, a tradition maintained with absolute seriousness by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. The Ethiopian Church maintains the most extensive biblical canon of any Christian church, including books not found in other biblical traditions, and preserves ancient Ge'ez liturgical texts of extraordinary antiquity. The Ethiopian Orthodox people have maintained their faith through extraordinary historical trials including the Italian invasion of 1936 and the brutal communist Derg regime, during which thousands of clergy and faithful were martyred.
