The Estonian Apostolic Orthodox Church represents the Orthodox Christian tradition of the Estonian people, a small but historically significant Baltic nation whose Orthodox community has maintained its faith through extraordinary historical pressures including Soviet occupation, forced deportations and decades of atheist persecution. Estonia received Christianity in the medieval period, with the Orthodox faith taking root primarily among the eastern Estonian population through the influence of the Russian Orthodox Church, while western Estonia was Christianised by German crusading orders. The Estonian Apostolic Orthodox Church, which is under the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, was established in its current form in 1923 and has maintained the Orthodox tradition in Estonia through all the vicissitudes of 20th century history. During the Soviet occupation the Church was suppressed and merged with the Russian Orthodox Church, but regained its connection to the Ecumenical Patriarchate after Estonian independence in 1991. The Orthodox faithful of Estonia maintain a deep and sincere piety, celebrating the ancient liturgical tradition in the Estonian language and preserving their distinctive Orthodox identity within the broader Estonian society. The small size of the Estonian Orthodox community makes its faithfulness all the more remarkable and admirable.
