The Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church is one of the most ancient Christian churches in the world, part of the Oriental Orthodox family and sharing in the ancient apostolic tradition of Christianity in the Horn of Africa that dates back to the 4th century when Saint Frumentius, known in Ethiopia and Eritrea as Abba Selama the Revealer of Light, brought the Christian faith to the Aksumite Kingdom. The word Tewahedo in the church's name is a Ge'ez word meaning being made one, referring to the Oriental Orthodox understanding of the nature of Christ. Eritrea was historically part of the Aksumite Empire, one of the greatest civilisations of the ancient world, which was also one of the first kingdoms in the world to adopt Christianity as its official religion in the 4th century under King Ezana. The Eritrean Orthodox Church received its autocephaly in 1993 following Eritrean independence. The church maintains the ancient liturgical tradition of the Ge'ez rite, one of the oldest Christian liturgical traditions in the world, and its monasteries in the highlands of Eritrea are among the most ancient monastic communities in all of Christianity.
