The Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos is one of the Twelve Great Feasts of the Orthodox Church, celebrated in August, and is the feast that crowns the entire liturgical year with the glorification of the Mother of God. The feast commemorates the repose, dormition meaning falling asleep, of the Most Holy Virgin Mary and her bodily translation into heaven. According to Orthodox tradition the apostles were miraculously gathered from all parts of the world to be present at her repose, and our Lord Jesus Christ Himself descended to receive her soul. Her body was then buried in Gethsemane, but when the tomb was opened three days later it was found empty, her body having been assumed into heaven. The feast is preceded by a two-week fast, the Dormition Fast, from 1st to August, and is celebrated with some of the most beautiful liturgical services of the entire year. The troparion of the feast proclaims that in her dormition she has not forsaken the world.

O Most Holy Theotokos, who even in thy holy dormition dost not forsake the world but dost intercede ceaselessly before thy Son for all who call upon thee, receive our prayer and lead us through thy intercession to the eternal life which thou thyself now enjoyest. Amen.
