The Orthodox Church of the Czech Lands and Slovakia represents the Orthodox Christian tradition in the heart of Central Europe, a church with deep historical roots in the apostolic mission of Saints Cyril and Methodius who brought the Orthodox faith and the Slavonic liturgy to the Great Moravian Empire, which encompassed much of present-day Czech Republic and Slovakia, in the 9th century. The mission of Saints Cyril and Methodius to Moravia in 863 AD was one of the most significant missionary endeavours in the entire history of Christianity, bringing not only the faith but a written alphabet and liturgical literature in the language of the people, establishing the foundations of Slavic Christian civilisation. Although the Czech lands were subsequently Germanised and the Orthodox faith was displaced by Roman Catholicism and later Protestantism, the memory of Saints Cyril and Methodius has never been forgotten and the Czech Orthodox Church has maintained a continuous presence since the modern revival of Orthodoxy in the region. The great bishop and martyr Saint Gorazd of Prague, who was martyred by the Nazis in 1942 for sheltering the paratroopers who assassinated Reinhard Heydrich, is one of the most celebrated modern martyrs of the Czech Orthodox Church and is venerated throughout the Orthodox world. He was glorified as a saint in 1961.
