The Church of Cyprus is one of the oldest and most venerable autocephalous churches in the entire Orthodox world, granted its autocephaly at the Third Ecumenical Council of Ephesus in 431 AD, making it the oldest autocephalous church in existence after Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch and Jerusalem. Cyprus holds an extraordinary place in the history of early Christianity as the island where the Apostle Paul and Saint Barnabas, himself a native Cypriot born in Salamis, preached the Gospel and converted the Roman proconsul Sergius Paulus, making Cyprus the first territory in the world to be governed by a Christian ruler. The island is home to some of the earliest Christian churches and monasteries in the world, including the Monastery of Saint Barnabas founded over his relics and the Kykkos Monastery which houses one of the icons said to have been painted by Saint Luke the Evangelist himself. Cyprus has produced remarkable saints including Saint Spyridon, Saint Barnabas and the beloved modern Elder Philotheos Zervakos. The Cypriot Orthodox people have maintained their faith through Byzantine rule, Crusader occupation, Venetian rule, Ottoman conquest and the continuing division of their island since 1974 with extraordinary steadfastness.
