The Coptic Church traces an unbroken succession of patriarchs from Saint Mark himself to the present day, over two thousand years of continuous Christian witness in the land of Egypt. The word Coptic is derived from the Greek and Arabic words for Egypt and the Copts are the indigenous Christian people of Egypt, the direct descendants of the ancient Egyptians who received the Gospel from Saint Mark and have maintained their faith through Roman persecution, the Arab conquest, Ottoman rule and the modern era. Egypt holds a uniquely important place in biblical history as the land of the Exodus, the land that sheltered the Holy Family during their flight from Herod, and the birthplace of Christian monasticism through Saint Anthony the Great and Saint Pachomius. The Coptic Church has produced an extraordinary treasury of saints, theologians and martyrs and continues to face severe persecution in Egypt, producing many martyrs in the modern era including the celebrated twenty-one Coptic martyrs beheaded in Libya in 2015.
