The middle large bar is the main crossbeam to which the hands of Christ were nailed. The lower diagonal bar represents the footrest to which the feet of Christ were nailed, tilted at an angle with the right side higher to indicate that the repentant thief crucified on Christ's right rose to paradise while the unrepentant thief on His left descended to hades. This eight-pointed cross is sometimes called the Russian Orthodox Cross or the Eastern Orthodox Cross and is found on Orthodox church domes, in Orthodox iconography and in Orthodox Christian art throughout the world.
