The Belarusian Orthodox Church, as an exarchate of the Russian Orthodox Church, represents the Orthodox Christian tradition of the Belarusian people, a tradition rooted in the same Baptism of Kievan Rus in 988 that brought Christianity to all the Eastern Slavic peoples. Belarus, known historically as White Russia or White Ruthenia, has been an Orthodox Christian land for over a thousand years, and the Orthodox faith has shaped the culture, language, literature and national identity of the Belarusian people through centuries of extraordinary historical pressure including occupation by Catholic Poland-Lithuania, the Russian Empire, Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. The ancient city of Polotsk in Belarus was one of the earliest centres of Orthodox Christianity among the Eastern Slavs, and Saint Euphrosyne of Polotsk, the 12th century princess who became a nun and built churches and schools for her people, is one of the most beloved saints of the Belarusian Orthodox tradition. Belarus has also produced remarkable modern saints and confessors including the New Martyrs who died under Soviet persecution. The Orthodox faithful of Belarus maintain their ancient liturgical tradition with great devotion amidst the complex challenges of the modern world.
