The Holy Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ is one of the Twelve Great Feasts of the Orthodox Church, celebrated forty days after Holy Pascha, always on a Thursday. The Ascension commemorates the bodily ascent of the Risen Christ into heaven in the presence of His apostles on the Mount of Olives outside Jerusalem. Having appeared to His disciples for forty days after the Resurrection, teaching them about the Kingdom of God and commissioning them to make disciples of all nations, He led them out to Bethany and was lifted up while they were watching, and a cloud took Him out of their sight. Two angels then appeared and proclaimed that this same Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven will come back in the same way you have seen Him go. The Ascension declares that human nature, assumed by the Son of God at the Incarnation, is now enthroned at the right hand of the Father, and that our humanity has been taken into the very life of God.

O Lord Jesus Christ, who didst ascend in glory to the Father taking our human nature with Thee and seating it at the right hand of the Majesty on high, grant us to follow Thee thither in heart and mind and to dwell with Thee forever in the heavenly places. Amen.
