The Holy Archangel Uriel is one of the seven archangels who stand before the throne of God, venerated in the Orthodox Christian tradition as the angel of divine light, of wisdom and of the fire of God. His name in Hebrew means God is my light or fire of God, and he is understood in Orthodox iconographic and theological tradition as the angel who stands as the messenger of divine illumination, bringing the light of God's wisdom and truth to those who dwell in darkness and ignorance. He is depicted in Orthodox iconography holding a flame or a sword of fire, symbolising the purifying and illuminating fire of divine grace. According to Orthodox tradition Uriel was the angel who stood at the gates of Eden with the flaming sword after the expulsion of Adam and Eve, and he is also associated with the descent of divine fire upon the sacrifice of Elijah on Mount Carmel. He is venerated alongside all the holy Bodiless Powers at the Synaxis celebrated in November, and his individual memory is honoured in November.
