The Holy Archangel Selaphiel is one of the seven archangels who stand before the throne of God, venerated in the Orthodox Christian tradition as the angel of prayer, the heavenly intercessor who presents the prayers of the faithful before God and who inspires the heart to turn toward God in supplication and worship. His name in Hebrew means prayer of God or one who prays to God, and he is depicted in Orthodox iconography in a posture of prayer, his hands folded or raised toward heaven, his gaze downcast in humble supplication before the divine majesty. He is understood as the heavenly model and patron of all who seek to develop a life of prayer, the angel who stands beside the faithful as they pray and who carries their prayers upward to the throne of the Most High. He is venerated as the special protector of those who struggle in prayer, who find prayer difficult or dry, and who need divine assistance to persevere in their daily prayer rule. He is commemorated together with all the holy Bodiless Powers at the Synaxis in November.
