The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and All the East is one of the four ancient patriarchates of the Orthodox Church and one of the most historically significant Christian communities in the entire world, tracing its foundation directly to the Apostles Peter and Paul who established the Church in Antioch and to the Apostle Peter who served as its first bishop before his departure for Rome. Antioch, located in what is now southern Turkey near the Syrian border, holds a supreme place in early Christian history as the city where the disciples of Christ were first called Christians, the great city where Saint Paul launched his three great missionary journeys, and one of the foremost centres of Christian theology in the ancient world, producing such luminaries as Saint John Chrysostom, the greatest preacher in Christian history, Saint Ignatius of Antioch, and Saint John of Damascus. The Patriarchate of Antioch today serves primarily the Orthodox Christian communities of Syria, Lebanon, and the Arab world as well as a vast diaspora throughout the Americas, Europe and Australia. The faithful of the Patriarchate have suffered terribly through the Syrian civil war and the persecution of Christians throughout the Middle East, maintaining their ancient witness amidst extraordinary hardship.
