The Annunciation of the Most Holy Theotokos is one of the Twelve Great Feasts of the Orthodox Church, celebrated in April exactly nine months before the Nativity of Christ, and is one of the most theologically momentous events in the entire history of the universe. The feast commemorates the appearance of the Holy Archangel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary in Nazareth, bringing the message that she had been chosen by God to conceive and bear the Son of God made flesh. The feast is so important that it is celebrated even when it falls on Great and Holy Friday.
