Saint Timothy, raised from childhood in the Christian faith by his mother Eunice and grandmother Lois, became one of the closest and most trusted companions of the Apostle Paul, accompanying him on extensive missionary journeys and serving as a co-worker entrusted with delicate and often difficult responsibilities within the young churches Paul had founded. Tradition holds that Timothy went on to become the first Bishop of Ephesus, a position in which he served faithfully for many years before meeting his own martyrdom, reportedly killed by an angry pagan mob after he attempted to halt a riotous festival procession held in honour of a pagan goddess. He is honoured among the apostolic company for the quiet faithfulness of a life spent largely in another's shadow, proof that some of the most significant work of the Gospel is accomplished not by those who lead alone, but by those who serve faithfully alongside someone else.

O holy Apostle Timothy, who didst serve faithfully at another's side and gave thy life in defence of the truth, intercede for us, that we too may find meaning in faithful service, whether we lead or simply walk beside another. Amen.
