Saint Stylianos of Paphlagonia Framed Canvas Icon
Saint Stylianos, a monk of the region of Paphlagonia in Asia Minor, embraced a life of extreme asceticism from his youth, distributing his inheritance to the poor before withdrawing to a cave where he devoted himself entirely to prayer and fasting for the remainder of his long life. He became known during his lifetime for an unusual and tender devotion to children, frequently depicted in icons holding infants in his arms, and mothers throughout the Greek-speaking world have for centuries brought their children to be blessed before his image, particularly in times of illness or danger in infancy. Relatively little else is recorded of his life beyond this enduring association with the protection and wellbeing of the very young, yet this single aspect of his memory has secured him a place among the most beloved and frequently invoked saints at the birth of a child. He remains a particular comfort to parents anxious for the health and safety of their children.
“Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.” (Mark 10:14)
O holy Father Stylianos, beloved guardian of little children, intercede for us and for our children, that they may grow in health and in the knowledge and love of Christ. Amen.
