Saint Simeon, known to history as Stefan Nemanja, ruled as Grand Prince of Serbia and is remembered as the founder of the medieval Serbian state, uniting scattered territories under a single stable rule and laying the political foundations upon which his descendants would build for generations. Late in his life, following the example his own son Sava had already set, Nemanja abdicated his throne and embraced monastic life, taking the name Simeon and joining his son at the Hilandar Monastery on Mount Athos, where father and son lived together in the same community of prayer. After his repose, his relics were found to stream forth a fragrant myrrh, a wonder the Church has long regarded as a visible sign of sanctity, and from this his title, the Myrrh-Streaming, has remained attached to his name ever since. He is venerated as the founder of the Nemanjic dynasty and as a powerful witness that worldly power, rightly surrendered, can become the foundation of a far greater inheritance.

O holy Father Simeon, who didst lay down an earthly throne to take up the cross of monastic life, intercede for us, that we too may learn to surrender what we hold tightly for the sake of what truly lasts. Amen.
