Saint Sava, born Rastko Nemanjic, son of the Serbian Grand Prince Stefan Nemanja, abandoned the comforts of royal life as a young man to become a monk on Mount Athos, choosing the discipline of prayer and asceticism over the throne that might otherwise have awaited him. He later persuaded his own father to follow the same path, and together they founded the Hilandar Monastery on the Holy Mountain, a community that remains a centre of Serbian monastic life to this day. Returning to Serbia, Sava worked tirelessly to secure full independence for the Serbian Church from external jurisdiction, becoming in 1219 the first Archbishop of an autocephalous Serbian Orthodox Church, and he is credited with compiling Serbia's earliest written legal code, drawing together canon law and civil governance into a single guiding text for his people. He is remembered as the father of Serbian literacy, education, and national identity, and his name remains inseparable from the very idea of what it means to be Serbian and Orthodox together.
