Saint Peter, originally a fisherman of Galilee named Simon, was called by Christ Himself to leave his nets and become a fisher of men, soon emerging as the foremost among the Twelve Apostles and the first to confess Christ openly as the Son of the living God. His path was marked as much by failure as by faith, for this same disciple who walked upon the water at Christ's word also denied knowing Him three times on the night of His arrest, weeping bitterly once he understood what he had done. Restored after the Resurrection through a threefold question of love that mirrored his threefold denial, Peter went on to become a foundational leader of the early Church in Jerusalem and later in Rome, where tradition holds he was crucified upside down at his own request, considering himself unworthy to die in the same manner as his Lord. He remains one of the most relatable of all the saints, a powerful witness that no failure, however great, places a person beyond the reach of Christ's restoring grace.

O holy and glorious Apostle Peter, who didst fall and was raised up again by the mercy of Christ, intercede for us in our own weakness, that we too may rise each time we fall and remain faithful unto the end. Amen.
