Saint Panteleimon trained as a physician in the city of Nicomedia during the early fourth century, gaining considerable skill in medicine before his conversion to Christianity, after which he began treating the sick and the poor entirely without charge, attributing every healing he performed to the power of Christ rather than to his own skill alone. His reputation for effective and compassionate treatment, freely given regardless of a patient's ability to pay, drew the attention of the authorities of his day, and when it became known that he had converted to the faith and was healing in the name of Christ, he was arrested and subjected to severe torture before his eventual martyrdom. The very name Panteleimon, meaning All-Compassionate, reflects how the Church has remembered him across the centuries, and he remains one of the most widely invoked saints among the sick, with hospitals, clinics, and chapels dedicated to him found throughout the Orthodox world.

“Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church... and the prayer of faith shall save the sick.” (James 5:14-15)

O holy and great Martyr and Healer Panteleimon, who didst heal the sick without price and without pride, intercede for us in our infirmities, that we may know the healing that comes from Christ alone. Amen.
