Saint Oswald, King of Northumbria, embraced the Christian faith during a period of exile among the monks of Iona before later returning to claim his throne, bringing with him a personal conviction that would shape the whole of his subsequent reign. He became known for a generosity that matched his piety, a celebrated account describing how, upon seeing beggars gathered outside during an Easter feast, he ordered a great silver dish set before him to be broken into pieces and distributed among them rather than reserved for his own table. Though it was Oswald who invited Bishop Aidan to establish the mission that would bring Christianity firmly into Northumbria, his own reign ended in battle against the pagan King Penda of Mercia, where he was killed defending his kingdom, a death the Church came to regard as a form of martyrdom suffered in defence of the Christian faith he had worked to establish. His cult spread widely across early medieval England and into continental Europe in the centuries following his death, and the Orthodox Church remembers him, alongside the other early saints of these islands, as a king who placed faith and charity above the comforts of his own throne.

O holy King Oswald, who didst give freely to the poor and lay down thy life in defence of the faith, intercede for us, that we too may hold our possessions loosely and our faith firmly. Amen.
