Matrona was born blind in a small village south of Moscow and lost the use of her legs entirely by her mid-twenties, living the remainder of her long life unable to see or walk, dependent at every turn on the care of others around her. Despite these profound limitations, or perhaps because of the deep life of prayer they drove her toward, she became known for an extraordinary gift of spiritual insight, receiving a steady stream of visitors seeking guidance, comfort, and healing throughout some of the darkest decades of Soviet anti-religious persecution, when such activity carried real personal risk. She moved frequently between the homes of friends and acquaintances in Moscow to avoid the attention of the authorities, continuing her quiet ministry of prayer and counsel under conditions that would have silenced a less determined faith. Since her canonisation, her relics at the Intercession Convent in Moscow have become one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in all of Russia, drawing pilgrims, many of them women, in queues that can stretch for hours through the streets surrounding the convent.

O holy Mother Matrona, blind from birth yet granted true spiritual sight, intercede for us, that even in our own weakness the works of God may be made manifest. Amen.
