Saint John served for more than fifty years as a parish priest in the naval town of Kronstadt near Saint Petersburg, ministering with particular devotion to the city's poorest residents, the dockworkers, beggars, and outcasts whom polite society of his day largely overlooked. He celebrated the Divine Liturgy with an intensity and evident faith that drew worshippers by the thousands, and he became a tireless advocate for frequent participation in Holy Communion at a time when many Orthodox Christians received it only rarely, insisting that the sacrament was meant to nourish ordinary believers far more often than custom then allowed. Numerous healings, both physical and spiritual, were attributed to his prayers during his own lifetime, witnessed by enormous crowds who travelled from across Russia to seek his blessing, and he established a House of Industriousness offering work, shelter, and education to the destitute of his city. His published spiritual diary continues to be read widely, and he remains one of the most beloved pastoral saints of the modern Orthodox Church.

O holy Father John, who didst serve the poor and outcast of thy city and call all believers to draw near to Christ in the Holy Mysteries, intercede for us, that we too may see Christ in the least among us and approach Him often and with reverence. Amen.
