Saint Columba left his native Ireland as a missionary pilgrim, tradition holding that this departure followed a serious dispute back home and was undertaken in a spirit of penance as much as evangelism, and he established a monastery on the small island of Iona off the coast of Scotland that would become one of the most influential centres of Christian learning and mission in the whole of the British Isles. From Iona, missionaries trained in his tradition carried the Gospel deep into Scotland and northern England, including Saint Aidan, who would later found Lindisfarne after being formed within the very community Columba had established. He was renowned for his own discipline of copying manuscripts by hand, a labour the monks of Iona continued long after his death, preserving texts that might otherwise have been lost amid the upheavals of the era. He is venerated alongside Saint Andrew as a patron of Scotland, and the Orthodox Church honours him, like the other early saints of these islands, as a faithful missionary of the shared Christian inheritance that predates the later division between East and West.
