Saint Catherine, a learned young woman of Alexandria in the early fourth century, was renowned for her exceptional education in philosophy and rhetoric at a time when such learning was rarely afforded to women, and tradition holds that she used this very learning to defend her Christian faith before pagan scholars assembled specifically to refute her, confounding them so thoroughly that several were said to have converted as a result. When neither argument nor threat could move her, the Roman authorities subjected her to torture upon a spiked wheel, an instrument so closely associated with her story that it remains known to this day as a Catherine wheel, before her eventual execution by beheading. Her combination of intellectual brilliance and unwavering faith made her a particularly beloved patron of students, scholars, and philosophers throughout the centuries since, a reminder that learning and faith were never meant to stand opposed to one another. She remains one of the most celebrated virgin martyrs of the early Church.
