Saint Benedict withdrew as a young man from the distractions of Roman society to live first as a hermit and then as the founder of a series of small monastic communities, eventually establishing his most famous foundation at Monte Cassino in Italy. He composed a Rule for monastic life that balanced prayer, manual labour, and communal discipline with a moderation and practical wisdom that distinguished it from some of the more severe monastic customs of his day, summarised in the enduring motto often associated with his name, to pray and to work. This Rule went on to become the foundational guide for monasticism across Western Europe for many centuries afterward, shaping countless communities long after his own lifetime had ended. Like the other early Western saints honoured upon this list, Benedict lived centuries before the later division between East and West, and the Orthodox Church continues to honour him as a father of the shared monastic tradition that nourished the whole of the early Christian world.
