Saint Basil served as a bishop in the region of Herzegovina during a period of intense Ottoman pressure upon the Orthodox Church, withdrawing eventually to a remote cave set high within a cliff face near Ostrog in present-day Montenegro, where he embraced a life of severe asceticism away from the dangers and compromises of his earlier episcopal duties. The monastery that grew up around his cave dwelling, built directly into the rock itself, became and remains one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the entire Balkan region, drawing not only Orthodox believers but also Catholics and Muslims who travel from across the region seeking healing through his intercession. Numerous miracles, particularly of physical healing, have been attributed to him both during his lifetime and in the centuries since his repose, and his relics remain enshrined within the monastery to this day. He stands as a remarkable witness to a holiness so evident that it has drawn reverence across confessional lines rarely crossed in that part of the world.
