Empress Alexandra, born a German princess and granddaughter of Britain's Queen Victoria, married Nicholas II and became Empress of Russia, devoting much of her time as Empress to charitable works and to the care of her children, including her son Alexei, who suffered from haemophilia, a condition that caused the family considerable private anguish throughout his childhood. Deeply devout, she maintained an active prayer life and a close attachment to the Orthodox faith she had embraced upon her marriage, finding in it a source of strength through both public scrutiny and private sorrow during her years as Empress. Following the revolution, she shared fully in her family's captivity and eventual execution at Yekaterinburg in 1918, maintaining throughout that final ordeal the same quiet faith that had sustained her through earlier trials. She is venerated alongside her husband and children as a New Martyr, remembered for a devotion to prayer and to her family that remained unbroken even in the face of death.
