The Ladder of Divine Ascent is one of the most theologically rich compositions in Orthodox iconography, depicting monks climbing a ladder of thirty rungs toward Christ in heaven, each rung corresponding to a chapter of St. John Climacus's 7th-century ascetically treatise of the same name. Along the way, some ascend successfully while others are pulled from the ladder by demons, a vivid image of the struggle between virtue and temptation that has shaped Orthodox spiritual life for over a millennium.

This particular composition follows the celebrated 1663 tempera panel by Emmanuel Tzanes, a Cretan-born painter and priest of the Late Cretan School, completed three years after his appointment as priest of San Giorgio dei Greci in Venice. Tzanes painted in the traditional Greek manner while absorbing something of the Venetian style around him, and his rendering of the Ladder remains one of the most detailed and enduring versions of this ancient icon type.

A meaningful Orthodox gift for baptisms, name days, weddings, and feast celebrations.
